Conservative news agency speaks out against tax audit

Conservative news agency Breitbart News Network is reportedly speaking out against the Internal Revenue Service’s decision to subject the network to a tax audit. The subject of the audit is the company’s 2012 financial information. Sources say that it isn’t clear whether the audit of the company is a matter of course or extraordinary, but Breitbart is convinced it is politically motivated.

Part of the reason for that is that the IRS has been under fire recently for accusations that it subjected conservative groups to additional examination while they sought out status as nonprofits. That practice has been put to an end, but conservative groups are still coming forward alleging wrongdoing. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has spoken with concern about the audit, given the agency’s track record with conservative groups. It remains to be seen what the outcome of the audit will be, but Breitbart has committed itself to cooperating with the effort.

Tax audits, for most people, can be a stressful experience, particularly when there are allegations of tax crime. It is important for both businesses and individuals to understand their rights in an audit. These rights include the right to privacy and confidentiality; the right to know why the audit is being conducted; the right to be represented by an attorney; and the right to appeal any decision the IRS may come to at the end of the audit.

It is important for anybody who is being subject to a tax audit to understand the audit process and to feel confident about their rights. In the event of an appeal, it can be particularly helpful to work with an experienced attorney.
